BACKGROUND: Congenital ileal atresia is a rare neonatal disease, the most common type of intestinal malformation in newborns, and one of the most common causes of congenital intestinal obstruction. It can cause various digestive system symptoms, including abdominal distension, vomiting, abnormal bowel movements, etc. In severe cases, it can be life-threatening. A prenatal ultrasound examination can assist clinical diagnosis of congenital ileal atresia, and those with a clear prenatal diagnosis should undergo surgical treatment after birth. CASE PRESENTATION: We have, herein, reported two cases of congenital ileal atresia, both of which showed fetal intestinal dilation (>7mm) and excessive amniotic fluid on prenatal ultrasound. Both newborns underwent surgical treatment after delivery and were confirmed to have congenital ileal atresia during surgery. Due to the different prenatal ultrasound manifestations of the two patients, they were divided into two different subtypes based on intraoperative manifestations. We observed significant differences in the prognosis of the two patients after surgery. CONCLUSION: Accurately locating and classifying ileal atresia using prenatal ultrasound is challenging; however, it plays an effective role in disease progression, gestational assessment, and prognosis. Accurately identifying intestinal diseases and/or the location of lesion sites through direct and indirect ultrasound findings in the fetal abdominal cavity is an important research direction for prenatal ultrasound.

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common cause of pain in the lumbar spine and legs. While acupuncture has become the primary conservative treatment for LDH, some patients experience treatment failure and require surgery, causing substantial concern for clinicians. We developed an effective personalized clinical prediction model to identify the independent risk factors associated with acupuncture failure in patients with LDH. Our model aimed to predict the probability of surgery within 6 months of acupuncture failure in patients with LDH. A total of 738 patients with LDH who underwent acupuncture at 4 Chinese hospitals between January 2019 and October 2021 were selected. The patients were divided into training (n = 496) and validation (n = 242) cohorts. Seven predictive variables, including smoking, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score, lower-limb herniation, disc herniation type, lumbar spinal stenosis, lumbar lateral recess stenosis, and acupuncture frequency, were selected as risk factors using least absolute shrinkage and selection operato (LASSO) regression. A prediction model was developed using multivariate logistic regression analysis and a nomogram was constructed. The model exhibited good discrimination, with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.903 for the development cohort and 0.899 for the validation cohort. The Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test was a good fit for both cohorts (P = .956 for the development cohort; P = .513 for the validation cohort). Decision curve analysis (DCA) demonstrated that the threshold probabilities for the 2 cohorts ranged from > 4% and 5-95%, respectively. Therefore, the prediction model had a good net benefit. The nomogram established in this study, incorporating 7 risk factors, demonstrated a good predictive ability. It could predict acupuncture failure in LDH patients and the risk of surgery within 6 months, enabling physicians to conduct individualized treatment measures.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, there has been widespread concern in the community, especially on the recent heated debate about when to get the booster vaccination. In order to explore the optimal time for receiving booster shots, here we construct an SVIR model with two time delays based on temporary immunity. Second, we theoretically analyze the existence and stability of equilibrium and further study the dynamic properties of Hopf bifurcation. Then, the statistical analysis is conducted to obtain two groups of parameters based on the official data, and numerical simulations are carried out to verify the theoretical analysis. As a result, we find that the equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable when the booster vaccination time is within the critical value. Moreover, the results of the simulations also exhibit globally stable properties, which might be more beneficial for controlling the outbreak. Finally, we propose the optimal time of booster vaccination and predict when the outbreak can be effectively controlled.

Background: Ultrasound is key to evaluating placental function. However, traditional ultrasound examinations cannot evaluate the changes in the biomechanical properties of the placenta in vivo. As a non-invasive technique, shear wave elastography (SWE) can be used analyze the physiological and biomechanical properties of the placenta. Moreover, it can evaluate the pathological changes in early placental insufficiency in a more direct and sensitive manner.Objective: This study aimed to systematically introduce SWE in placental function evaluations.Materials and methods: The terms 'placenta', 'ultrasound', and 'elastography' were searched on Pubmed, Embase, and CNKI databases (Apr 2023); this review was limited to results including placental sonoelastography.Results: Twenty-six studies satisfied the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Herein, we introduce the basic principle of SWE, analyze the factors affecting placental measurements, and summarize the prospects of clinical applications of SWE in the field of obstetrical diseases.Conclusion: The SWE technology demonstrates excellent clinical application value and research prospects in obstetrics, particularly in placental function evaluation, owing to its objective and repeatable quantitative operation.

Objective: We aim to explore the clinical therapeutic effect of alternative wave electroacupuncture combined with Lee's naprapathy therapy on knee osteoarthritis (KOA) (blood stasis due to qi stagnation). Method: 122 patients with KOA treated in our hospital from January 2018 to October 2021 were randomly grouped into a combined group (n = 61) and a control group (n = 61). The combined group was treated with alternative wave electroacupuncture combined with Lee's naprapathy, while the control group was treated with alternative wave electroacupuncture alone. Clinical efficacy of the two groups was observed. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Lysholm Scale, Indexes of Severity for Osteoarthritis (ISOA), and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) were compared before and after treatment, followed up for 3 months and 6 months. The adverse reactions of the two groups were observed. Result: The overall response rate of the combined group (96.72%) was higher than that of the control group (81.97%), and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). After treatment and follow-up for 3 months and 6 months, the Lysholm score of the combined group was higher than that of the control group, while the VAS, ISOA, and WOMAC scores were lower than those of the control group, and the difference between the two was statistically significant (P < 0.05). There were no serious adverse reactions in both groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The alternative wave electroacupuncture combined with Lee's naprapathy is effective and safe in treating KOA (blood stasis due to qi stagnation).

Since the COVID-19 outbreak began in early 2020, it has spread rapidly and threatened public health worldwide. Vaccination is an effective way to control the epidemic. In this paper, we model a SAIM equation. Our model involves vaccination and the time delay for people to change their willingness to be vaccinated, which is influenced by media coverage. Second, we theoretically analyze the existence and stability of the equilibria of our model. Then, we study the existence of Hopf bifurcation related to the two equilibria and obtain the normal form near the Hopf bifurcating critical point. Third, numerical simulations based two groups of values for model parameters are carried out to verify our theoretical analysis and assess features such as stable equilibria and periodic solutions. To ensure the appropriateness of model parameters, we conduct a mathematical analysis of official data. Next, we study the effect of the media influence rate and attenuation rate of media coverage on vaccination and epidemic control. The analysis results are consistent with real-world conditions. Finally, we present conclusions and suggestions related to the impact of media coverage on vaccination and epidemic control.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia is one of the common complications of stroke, and it considerably influences the quality of life of patients. Acupuncture, a therapy used in traditional Chinese medicine for aphasia after stroke, has potential therapeutic effects. We aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of acupuncture on individuals with poststroke aphasia. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on acupuncture for poststroke aphasia (either alone or combined with other therapies) were included and compared. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis by searching databases, such as MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP, and Wanfang, from inception to July 15, 2019. No language restrictions were applied in this study. RESULTS: Fourteen trials involving 936 participants had poor reporting and methodological quality. Our meta-analysis showed that compared to the speech and language therapy (SLT) group, acupuncture combined with SLT could improve the rate of Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) (OR: 0.15, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.04-0.25, p = 0.005), scores of Aphasia Battery of Chinese (ABC) which includes repeating ability (SMD: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.24-1.69, p < 0.00001), reading ability (SMD: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.25-1.90, p < 0.00001), writing ability (SMD: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.19-1.86, p < 0.00001), naming ability (SMD: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.04-1.76, p < 0.00001), and listening comprehension ability (SMD: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.22-0.92, p = 0.001). All RCTs were considered at high risk of biased assessment. CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture (either alone or combined with SLT) may be effective for poststroke aphasia. In the future, rigorous clinical trials with an accurate method design and high reporting quality are required to validate our results.

BACKGROUND: Persistent and intractable hiccups are a common clinical symptom that cause considerable physical pain to patients and severely damage their quality of lives. An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that acupuncture applied at acupoints dominated by Cuanzhu (BL2) can be used as one of the nonpharmacological therapies for controlling intractable hiccups. However, there is insufficient evidence evaluating the safety and effectiveness of those interventions. Therefore, this study is intended to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to provide evidence for a further study investigating alternative treatment options for persistent and intractable hiccups. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of adult patients aged >18 years who meet the criteria for intractable hiccup diagnosis will be included, regardless of gender, nationality, and education level. Eight electronic databases will be searched, including 4 Chinese databases (CNKI, SinoMed, Wanfang Database, and Chinese Scientific Journal Database), 4 English databases (Web of Science, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library), from their date of establishment to September 2020. Two independent reviewers will evaluate the title summary for each RCT. Disagreements will be discussed with a third commentator. Data integration, heterogeneity analysis, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity analysis, will be performed using R-3.3.2 software. The RevMan 5.3 software will be used for the meta-analysis, and the "risk of bias" assessment will be conducted based on the methodological quality of the included trials recommended by the Cochrane Handbook 5.1. The quality evaluation of this study will be completed by the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). RESULTS: This study will summarize all the selected trials aimed at estimating the effectiveness, as well as safety, of applying acupuncture at acupoints dominated by Cuanzhu (BL2) to persistent and intractable hiccups. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review will provide evidence to assess the validity and safety of applying acupuncture at acupoints dominated by Cuanzhu (BL2) for persistent and intractable hiccups, which may provide clinicians with more choices in the treatment of this disease.
